Established in 1990, SRBB aims to promote the safe, sustainable and beneficial use of fundamental research and innovation in Bioengineering and Biotechnology, while providing a forum for interdisciplinary and international cooperation. Thus, SRBB is involved in:

• Promotion of national and international interdisciplinary cooperation;

  · Organization of workshops, scientific meetings;

  · Encouraging collaboration between academia, research and industry;

  · Carrying out studies and research in specific subfields;

  · Collaborations with government bodies on specific issues related to Bioengineering and Biotechnology, with an impact on the national economy;

  · Stimulating innovation and technology transfer;

  · Promoting the socially and ethically sound application of biotechnology;

  · Promoting public understanding of biotechnology;

  · Dissemination of specific information;

  · Involvement in all forms of education and vocational training

OBJECTIVES

The "Romanian Society of Bioengineering and Biotechnology" has as its objective the scientific and economic affirmation of bioengineering and biotechnologies in the conditions where classical industrialization involves inadmissible dangers for the biosphere. It is imperative to harmonize the technosphere with the biosphere. This involves the reconsideration of the technical sphere through the prism of bioengineering and biotechnologies, the ecological advantages of these fields being known.

Biotechnology, as a general concept, focuses on the use, development and adaptation of biological processes to develop technologies and products that meet the various needs of society. Biotechnologies use biological systems and living organisms and by modifying them obtain value-added products (e.g. production of biofuels or antibiotics).

Biotechnology, as a distinct field, overlaps with several fields, such as medicine, chemistry and biology, and includes distinct subfields which, at the international level, have currently been assigned a color

• Red Biotechnologies: Medical (Health & Medical Applications)
• Yellow Biotechnologies: Food (Processing & Nutrition)
• Green/Brown Biotechnologies: Agriculture (including GMOs and Climate Change Adaptation)
• Gray biotechnologies: environment including bioremediation
• White biotechnologies: production of polymers, biofuels
• Blue biotechnologies: aquatic resources, including wastewater treatment
• Golden biotechnologies: laboratory practices, bioinformatics, molecular modeling
• Biotechnologies are also classified according to the type of living organisms used, developing specifically in the plant, animal or food field (vegetable, food, animal biotechnologies) including the use of microorganisms (bacteria, yeasts, fungi) generically called Microbial Biotechnologies, with applications industrial, agricultural, medical, etc.

Bioengineering is a multidisciplinary field that combines elements from various fields, including medicine, biology and engineering, and focuses on the development of materials, tools, equipment and technologies to design solutions or new approaches in biomedicine, for example the creation of prostheses, artificial organs, state-of-the-art surgical equipment. Bioengineering focuses on the application of engineering in biological processes, food, agriculture and environmental processes.

  Although there are overlaps between the two fields, there are also very clear differences between the two fields:

• Bioengineering is based on engineering principles allied to biology and medicine, with a distinctly multidisciplinary approach, while biotechnology is essentially an applied biological science.
• Bioengineering focuses on clinical and medical health, while biotechnology focuses on developing solutions in fields ranging from agriculture to bioeconomy and medicine.
• Biotechnology is based on the understanding of biology and chemistry, uses living organisms, to develop technological solutions, while bioengineering uses advanced knowledge of mathematics and physics, materials and advanced technologies developed.
• Bioengineering looks for solutions to diagnose, treat and prevent disease or disability while biotechnology has a wider application beyond genetics to waste management.
